This Dwarf Mugo Pine is commonly used to provide evergreen texture and winter interest during the colder months. Slow growing and easy to care for, this shrub or small tree will eventually reach a manageable 3-4 feet tall. Botanically named the Pinus mugo Var. Mughus, this shrub produces thin, dark-green needles on a mounding habit and small cones. Once established, this dwarf pine is low-maintenance.
Being evergreen, the Dwarf Mugo Pine will hang on to its attractive needles throughout the winter months. Native to mountainous regions of Europe, this dwarf pine is hardy and is suitable for growing in zones 3 to 8. Widely grown, it is often planted as part of a rock garden and grown individually or in a group. Being relatively compact, it is suitable for container growing.
Dwarf Mugo Pine Care
The Dwarf Mugo Pine is not fussy and will grow in any soil type as long as it is free draining. It does, however, prefer to be situated where it will receive full sun or partial shade. Being a tough shrub, it can tolerate an exposed spot. The Dwarf Mugo Pine requires regular watering until established, after which supplemental watering is necessary only during hot and dry spells. When container grown, this shrub will benefit from an annual application of slow-release fertilizer in the spring. For plants grown directly in the ground, an annual mulch of organic matter will suffice for supplemental nutrition.
If pruning is required, it must be carried out in the spring when the growing season begins. To maintain its size, the upright new growth, or candles as they are called, can be cut back to half the length using sharp and sanitized pruners. In winter, if heavy snow falls, it can be carefully brushed off to avoid damaging the branches below.
Dwarf Mugo Pine Spacing
The Dwarf Mugo Pine can grow up to 4 feet tall with a spread of 6 – 8 feet wide. With its slow growth, but considerable spread over time, care must be taken when choosing a site for this shrub.
