Growing Zones
The Allegheny serviceberry is a popular choice for decorative trees. It has year-round interest and appeal with its beautiful spring flowers, vibrant red fall foliage, and edible fruit in the summer. Allegheny serviceberry also features ovate dark-green foliage. This medium-fast growing deciduous tree has attractive silvery bark patterned with vertical lines. Allegheny serviceberry is able to grow up to 30 feet tall under the right conditions, but you can grow this tree as a shrub by pruning it regularly.
Best Locations For Growing Allegheny Serviceberry
The best location for growing Allegheny Serviceberry is somewhere that receives partial shade. This plant would look beautiful both indoors and outdoors. Consider a location like a covered patio on the east or west side of the home.
Allegheny Serviceberry Sunlight Requirements
In order for Allegheny serviceberry to thrive, provide it with plenty of indirect sunlight. Two or three feet away from a south-facing window, or near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. This plant will begin showing signs of stress when placed in full sun. Outdoors, grow it in a semi-shady area that gets partial sunlight for at least six hours a day.
Allegheny Serviceberry Care
Allegheny Serviceberry plants require pruning annually during the late winter or early spring. Prune before the first new leaves appear in mid to late spring. This plant will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions as long as drainage is adequate.
Watering Allegheny Serviceberry
Keep this plant’s soil moist but not soggy. Water it when the top three to four inches of soil are dry. Using a layer of mulch around the base will help retain moisture; just ensure that the mulch doesn’t touch the trunk.
Feeding Allegheny Serviceberry
Apply a well-balanced, half-strength liquid fertilizer to the soil around the plant every three to four weeks during the growing season. There is no need to fertilize this plant in the winter.
