Bacopa monnieri, a tropical and subtropical plant that occurs naturally in marshy areas and along slow-moving streams, is an excellent candidate for beginners to incorporate into aquarium planters. Pairs of light-green leaves grow from the base to the tip of a bright-green stem that can be cut back selectively to encourage a bushier habit. A mature, healthy plant that grows up and out of the water sprouts white to purple flowers. Bacopa monnieri, an herb in the Ayurvedic tradition of India, is also known as moneywort and water hyssop.

Best Locations For Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa monnieri works well as a mid- to background plant in a tank setting and will continue to grow vertically until it emerges from the water surface. This Bacopa can also be grown partially or entirely out of water, provided the growing substrate remains sufficiently moist. It prefers a site with ample light or supplemental lighting and is child and pet friendly.

Bacopa Monnieri Sunlight Requirements

The Bacopa monnieri performs best in areas with medium to bright light, with at least 6 to 8 hours of light. When grown as a floating specimen or pruned to have a bushier habit, it can provide shade for plants below that prefer lower light conditions.

Bacopa Monnieri Care

Add this species to an aquascape by simply setting it in a tank and letting it float, settle, and root or carefully position its roots in substrate. The Bacopa monnieri is a relatively easy plant to grow, even for beginners, but handle the stems of new plants carefully to avoid breaking them. Maintaining good water quality is key to caring for this plant.

Watering Bacopa Monnieri

Maintaining ideal water conditions in the aquascape allows the Bacopa to flourish. Keep the pH between 5 and 8 and the temperature around 70 degrees.

Feeding Bacopa Monnieri

If the Bacopa monnieri is kept in an aquarium with fish, the feed and waste in the environment typically creates a rich enough environment to support the plant. When fish are not present or there are many plants, use a weak dose of liquid fertilizer intended for aquarium use to supplement the Bacopa.
