Feature
Callisia repens ‘Pink Panther’ may appear delicate and tender, but it is a highly resilient houseplant, making it perfect for even the most inexperienced gardener. This plant features dainty, oval leaves with striking variegation in shades of pink and pale green. Native to dry regions in southern North America, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, Callisia can tolerate periods of drought and neglect, even as a houseplant. It was previously classified in the Tradescantia genus and is known by other common names, such as Inch Plant and Turtle Vine.
Best Locations for Growing Callisia Pink Panther
Callisia Pink Panther grows indoors, adapting well to the drier air typically found in homes. This spreading plant looks beautiful in a hanging basket or a wide, shallow pot, allowing its foliage to cascade gracefully over the sides. It can also be combined with other tropical plants that tolerate lower humidity levels. Keep it out of reach of children and pets because Callisia is poisonous if eaten.
Callisia Pink Panther Sunlight Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal for keeping the Pink Panther's colors bright. Direct sunlight can scorch and burn the leaves, especially during the hottest part of the day. An east or west-facing window is perfect, although the plant can also tolerate a room with southern exposure, as long as it is not placed directly in the window.
Callisia Pink Panther Care
Plant Callisia in a terracotta or plastic pot with sufficient drainage holes. Use an all-purpose indoor potting mix enhanced with perlite or fine grit to improve drainage. Regular trimming of the stems will promote a compact shape and provide cuttings for propagation. Stem cuttings root quickly in a glass of water and can be started at any time of the year.
Watering Callisia Pink Panther
Callisia stores water in its fleshy stems and needs the potting mix to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Check the soil weekly to make sure that at least 50% of it has dried. Water thoroughly so that excess moisture drains from the bottom of the pot, and empty any saucers or cache pots within 30 minutes to prevent soggy roots. Reduce watering during the shorter days of winter to every 14 days or more. Use distilled water when misting to avoid mineral spots on the foliage, which can diminish its delicate coloring.
Feeding Callisia Pink Panther
During the spring and summer months, use a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer at half the dosage recommended on the label. This will support strong growth and bright coloration.
