Dwarf Burford Holly, Ilex cornuta ‘Dwarf Burford’, is a compact evergreen shrub that delivers year-round beauty and seasonal interest. Its glossy, deep green foliage forms a dense, tidy habit that works well in smaller landscapes or as a low-maintenance foundation plant. In fall and winter, clusters of bright red berries appear, providing a valuable food source for birds and adding a cheerful splash of color to the garden. With its deer-resistant, spiny foliage and tolerance of heat and drought, this holly is a durable choice for hedges, borders, or group plantings.
Dwarf Burford Holly Care
Plant in well-drained soil and water regularly until established. Once mature, this holly becomes highly tolerant of both heat and drought. Minimal pruning is needed to maintain its shape, but trimming can be done in winter if desired. Applying mulch around the base in colder months helps protect the roots and conserve moisture.
Dwarf Burford Holly Spacing
For a formal hedge, plant 8 to 9 feet apart, measured from the center of each shrub. For an informal hedge or group planting, space plants at least 11 feet apart to allow for natural growth and spread.
