When To Use

Early spring is ideal for repotting bonsai. As bonsai grow in small containers, their roots can become crowded, limiting water and nutrient absorption. If you see roots circling the container or a dense root mass with minimal soil, it's time to repot and prune the roots. Depending on the variety, repotting may be needed every 2-3 years or up to every 5 years.

How To Apply

You'll Need

• Container (new or original) with a drainage hole
• Espoma Organic Bonsai Mix
• Sharp scissors
• Root rake
• Planting stick
• Mesh square for drainage hole
• Wire (optional)

Steps

1. Remove Bonsai: If wired in, carefully cut the wires. Gently lift the Bonsai from the container.

2. Trim Roots: Use the root rake to loosen and separate 1/3 to 1/2 of the outer root mass. Trim exposed roots with sharp scissors to form a compact root ball.

3. Prepare Container: Place a mesh screen over the drainage hole. If needed, insert wire through the container's holes to reattach later. Add a layer of Bonsai Mix to the bottom.

4. Position and Fill: Position the trimmed Bonsai in the container. Adjust plant height as needed by adding more mix. Fill around the roots with Bonsai Mix, pressing down to eliminate air pockets.

5. Rewire and Water: Rewire the Bonsai to the container. Water thoroughly and place in a protected area away from direct sun and wind. Check daily and water as needed.

Feeding

Feed with Espoma Indoor! liquid plant food 6-8 weeks after repotting.
