Frost Proof Gardenia, Gardenia jasminoides ‘Frost Proof’, is a hardy evergreen shrub prized for its fragrant, creamy white flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer. Unlike many other gardenias, this variety resists damage from late spring frosts, making it a reliable performer in cooler climates.
Its glossy, dark green foliage provides year-round interest and is naturally deer resistant. Frost Proof Gardenia works beautifully as a low hedge, foundation planting, or accent shrub, and also thrives in containers where its intoxicating fragrance can be enjoyed up close.
Frost Proof Gardenia Care
Plant in well-amended, slightly acidic soil with good drainage for best results. Keep soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season, and continue watering regularly even after the plant is established. Fertilize after the blooming season with an acid-loving plant fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowers. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and maintain its form.
Frost Proof Gardenia Spacing
For a formal hedge, space Frost Proof Gardenia shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart, center to center. For informal groupings or as stand-alone accents, plant at least 5 feet apart, measured from the center of each shrub.
