Calatheas, or prayer plants as they are often called, are popular houseplants that are easy to grow and care for. The Grey Star Calathea is grown for its attractive foliage, as it produces large gray leaves with contrasting green veins and a red underside. Originating from the jungles of South America, it is no surprise that these plants like to be grown in a warm and humid environment and to be kept away from cold drafts.
Best Locations For Growing Grey Star Calathea
The Grey Star Calathea can be grown in any room. However, due to its preference for high humidity levels, it is especially suited to a kitchen, living room or bathroom.
Grey Star Calathea Sunlight Requirements
The Grey Star Calathea is not too fussy when it comes to lighting requirements as it can tolerate medium to bright, indirect light. However, it is best to avoid placing it where it will receive strong direct light as this can damage the foliage.
Grey Star Calathea Care
Grey Star Calathea is happiest when grown in a room at 60°F - 80°F and does not tolerate cold drafts. Preferring a high humidity, this plant will benefit from being grown on a tray of wet pebbles and being misted regularly. Brown or dry leaves can be removed from the base of the stem using a pair of sanitized and sharp scissors. This calathea will require re-potting annually or when it outgrows its current pot.
Watering Grey Star Calathea
The Grey Star Calathea prefers a free-draining soil that is kept moist, but not wet, from spring until autumn. Water when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch, using rainwater when possible. After watering, allow any excess water to drain away freely to avoid overly wet roots. Watering can be reduced during the winter months.
Feeding Grey Star Calathea
The Grey Star Calathea will benefit from monthly feeding during the growing season with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
