Green Giant Arborvitae (Thuja plicata ‘Green Giant’) is known for its dense, feathery foliage and robust columnar form, perfect for year-round privacy or as a striking focal point. Its dark green needles maintain color even in winter, with only a slight bronze cast in colder climates. Mature trees can stretch 40 to 60 feet tall but stay narrowly pyramidal, making them ideal for hedging without consuming too much yard space. Capable of growing up to 3 feet per year, this evergreen quickly delivers a lush, stately presence in any landscape.
Choosing a live Green Giant Arborvitae for holiday décor helps you avoid single-use plastic or cut trees that end up in the landfill. Once the season is over, you can plant it outdoors instead of throwing it away, providing both a permanent landscape element and fewer wasted materials. The faint resinous scent also adds a natural aroma to indoor settings, creating a cozy ambience during shorter, darker days.
Holiday Green Giant Arborvitae Care
Water consistently while indoors, keeping the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Place the arborvitae in a bright spot away from direct heat sources, turning it occasionally so it retains a uniform shape. From January until your final frost date, check the soil weekly for dryness and mist lightly if the surrounding air is particularly dry.
When your area no longer risks frost, gradually transition your arborvitae outside by setting it outdoors for a few hours daily. Once acclimated, select a sunny site with well-drained soil and dig a hole twice the width of the root ball. Position the root flare just above ground level, backfill gently, and water thoroughly. A layer of mulch around the base retains moisture, letting this hardy evergreen grow quickly into a natural screen, hedge, or eye-catching specimen.
