Feature
Alocasia x amazonica is the scientific name of the very striking Ivory Coast Alocasia. This Alocasia has glossy heart-shaped leaves accented by silvery veins. Ivory Coast is a standout either displayed on its own or added to a collection of favorite tropical houseplants. This Alocasia looks impressive but is a very low-maintenance plant.
Best Locations For Growing Ivory Coast Alocasia
Alocasia prefers a medium level of light and can be grown in many rooms in the house. Large-leaved plants like Alocasia are natural air cleaners and can help to filter out air-borne chemicals from rugs, paint, and furniture. Ivory Coast can cause skin irritation by sap oozing out of damaged leaves.
Ivory Coast Alocasia Sunlight Requirements
Alocasia appreciates bright indirect or medium light inside the house, such as an east- or west-facing window. During the winter months, when light levels are lower, grow lights can be used to boost light levels. These Elephant Ears can also be grown outdoors during the summer months. When growing outside, Alocasia needs a semi-shaded to dappled shade position. Direct sun outdoors will cause sunscalding of the leaves.
Ivory Coast Alocasia Care
Alocasia grows best when indoor temperatures are between 60-85 degrees F and humidity is high. Misting some water around the plant daily will provide the right humidity level. Choose a potting mix formulated for indoor plants and add worm castings and fine orchid bark mix to enhance the soil fertility and improve drainage. Make sure to repot once a year in late winter, just as new growth is starting to appear. New potting soil in a slightly larger pot will keep Ivory Coast Alocasia growing robustly.
Watering Ivory Coast Alocasia
Do not let the soil around the tuber dry out completely. The soil should feel like a sponge that is thoroughly wrung out. Watering 2-3 times a week during the growing period of spring and summer will keep the soil evenly moist. Watering can be reduced to once a week or less during the winter when the growth slows. Alocasia will start to droop if the plant is under-watered. If Ivory Coast is overwatered, the stem will also droop, but will feel slimy and squishy. Remove all damaged leaves and let the plant dry out well before the next watering. Ivory Coast Alocasia will make a quick recovery and begin to sprout new leaves within a week or two.
Feeding Ivory Coast Alocasia
Ivory Coast Alocasia requires fertilizing every 3-4 weeks while it is in active growth over the spring and summer. Use a water-soluble formulation with a balanced ratio of N-P-K. A 10-10-10 ratio is perfect and helps to support the heavy foliage and root formation. Fertilizing during the winter can be stopped altogether as long as the color of the leaves remains vibrant.
