The Jester’s Crown Fern is sometimes referred to as a Boston fern or sword fern. The lush rainforest feel you get from this plant makes it a great addition to your home or office. The Jester’s Crown Fern is bushy and sturdy with long leaves. It features deep-green fronds that arch out from the base of the plant. Interestingly, this ancient fern variety may be one of the oldest plants on Earth and originates from Australia and New Guinea.
Best Locations For Growing Jester's Crown Fern
You can help your Jester’s Crown Fern grow strong by placing it in the bathroom or kitchen where humidity tends to be higher. This plant looks elegant in a hanging basket, or on any tabletop or windowsill. Jester’s Crown Fern is a popular plant seen on patios and decks.
Jester's Crown Fern Sunlight Requirements
For Jester's Crown Fern to thrive, provide it with plenty of indirect sunlight. Two or three feet away from a south-facing window, or near an east- or west-facing window would be ideal.
Jester's Crown Fern Care
In order to increase the humidity around this plant, you can place your fern on top of a tray filled with pebbles and water. Routine pruning can be done as needed to remove dead or discolored fronds from the base of the plant. This fern grows best in peaty, soil-based potting mix. You can repot your plant in the spring if it has outgrown its container or seems to have stopped growing. Look for roots coming through the drainage hole of the pot; then you’ll know it’s time to repot.
Watering Jester's Crown Fern
This rainforest fern prefers to have moist soil and high humidity. Water when the Jester’s Crown Fern top layer of the soil is dry, about two inches down. An under-watered fern can get crispy and drop leaves. An overwatered fern can develop yellow fronds and fungal diseases.
Feeding Jester's Crown Fern
Compared to other plants you might have in your home, the Jester’s Crown Fern doesn’t need as much fertilizer. Feeding your plant 2 to 3 times a year is plenty for a fern houseplant. Use a standard indoor plant fertilizer diluted to half the manufacturer’s recommended strength.
