Philodendrons are beloved for their minimal care requirements. Jungle Boogie is a Philodendron hybrid that lives up to this reputation. Its deep green, toothed leaves are long and strappy, growing larger with age. New growth is a jolt of neon green, adding even more interest to this stately tropical houseplant. Fun Fact: Jungle Boogie is sometimes referred to as the Tiger Tooth Philodendron, despite its native habitat being Southern Mexico, Central America, and South America—regions where tigers are not found.
Best Locations for Growing Jungle Boogie
Jungle Boogie can reach 4 to 6 feet tall and is particularly well-suited for training on a moss pole as a floor plant. It can thrive in hallways and entryways, and can handle high-traffic areas without damage to its leaves. Philodendrons grow best in high humidity, making kitchens and bathrooms ideal spots since these rooms typically have the highest humidity levels in a home. As with all Philodendron varieties, Jungle Boogie should be kept out of reach of pets and children, as all parts of the plant are considered toxic.
Jungle Boogie Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Philodendrons can adapt to various lighting conditions ranging from bright indirect light to low light. Jungle Boogie exhibits the best coloration in bright indirect light from an east or west-facing window. Northern exposure is also acceptable, and using a grow light is beneficial when natural light is insufficient. Low light conditions, such as in an office or dorm room, will sustain the plant, though growth will be slower.
Jungle Boogie Philodendron Care
Philodendrons, being Aroid plants, can grow with or without soil. They develop aerial roots that help them attach to trees in their native habitat. These roots can also be trained to cling to a trellis or moss-covered pole, providing vertical support and increasing leaf size. A Jungle Boogie leaf can measure up to 18 inches long. Use a potting mix rich in chunky organic material to create a lightweight mix with ample air pockets. A 1:1 ratio of orchid bark to all-purpose potting mix achieves this.
Watering Jungle Boogie Philodendron
Filtered tap water and collected rainwater are ideal for watering tropical houseplants. Water when the top 50 to 60 percent of the soil has dried out, but before the soil pulls away from the sides of the pot. Soak the soil thoroughly until water drains from the holes at the bottom. During spring and summer, check for watering once a week; in the shorter days of fall and winter, this can be reduced to every 10 to 14 days. Use distilled water to mist the leaves and maintain humidity, as minerals in tap water can leave white spots on the leaves.
Feeding Jungle Boogie Philodendron
Fertilize Jungle Boogie with an all-purpose houseplant formula once a month during spring and fall. A balanced NPK ratio supports all aspects of the plant's growth. For easy application, use a diluted liquid formulation or add a slow-release pellet fertilizer to the potting mix during repotting.
