Calatheas are the go-to foliage plants when looking for showy, interesting leaves, and Medallion III is no exception. Medallion III Calathea (Calathea roseopicta, also called Peacock Plant and Zebra Plant) is a variety with dark-green, slightly rippled leaves that look like they have been dry brushed with silvery-green paint, fanning out from the midrib. Like other Calatheas, the Medallion III experiences nyctinastic movement, its leaves responding to changes in light by dancing throughout the day. Given humid conditions, plenty of indirect light, and consistently moist soil, the Medallion III Calathea is a great pet-safe plant.
Best Locations For Growing Medallion III Calathea
With the reputation of being a fussy plant, Calatheas do best when kept in a bright spot where the soil moisture can be checked regularly and the leaves can receive plenty of humidity. For this reason, place the Medallion III Calathea in a bright bathroom or kitchen window with easy access to water and slightly higher humidity levels. Calatheas are non-toxic, making them safe for homes with pets and children.
Medallion III Calathea Sunlight Requirements
The Medallion III Calathea will thrive in medium to bright indirect light but can burn easily in direct sunlight. Place this plant in a north- or east-facing window or near a west- or south-facing window, protected from harsh afternoon sunlight. These plants can do well in the interior of a room if it is a bright space.
Medallion III Calathea Care
It is possible to keep Calathea leaves healthy and colorful with consistent attention and care. Calatheas originate from tropical, humid forest floors, and therefore thrive when provided with a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting. If the leaf edges become dry and crispy, the plant may not be getting enough humidity or the soil may have dried out too much. The soil of the Medallion III Calathea should be kept consistently moist but not soggy. Repot this plant every two years or so into a pot with drainage holes and well-draining peaty soil.
Watering Medallion III Calathea
Calatheas are intolerant of drying out, which often causes the beautiful leaves to shrivel, dry out, or form crispy edges. Because of this, the Medallion III Calathea may need to be watered every few days to keep its soil consistently moist. Allow the soil surface to dry in between waterings and water deeply until water comes out the bottom of the pot. Always keep Calathea in well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot. In the winter, watering may be cut back slightly, though the plant’s need for humidity may still be high.
Feeding Medallion III Calathea
Calatheas appreciate regular fertilizing during their growing season. Spring through summer, feed the Medallion III Calathea liquid indoor plant food once a month. Always take care to follow dilution recommendations when using fertilizer, as over-fertilizing can often damage plant roots and leaves. There is no need to fertilize in the winter as plants slow down their growth or even go dormant.
