Feature
An easy-going and pet-friendly plant, the Parallel Peperomia (Peperomia puteolata) is an excellent plant for the plant enthusiast and new plant parent alike. Like other Peperomia, the Parallel Peperomia is a semi-succulent, able to handle periods of drought better than many traditional houseplants. The small, pointed leaves of this plant are thick and dark green with sage-colored veins, looking much like the rind of a watermelon, whorled around a sturdy garnet-colored vine.
Best Locations For Growing Parallel Peperomia
Thriving in bright indirect light, the Parallel Peperomia does well on a windowsill or within a bright room. This plant does well as a hanging plant as well as in a planter. Place this plant in a living room or kitchen window, or hang it in a bright bedroom. Because it is drought tolerant, this Peperomia can also be placed on a shelf or other hard-to-reach spot without the worry of having to check it daily. As a non-toxic plant, Peperomia can be placed in homes with children and pets.
Parallel Peperomia Sunlight Requirements
Like most Peperomias, the Parallel Peperomia will grow best in bright indirect light, able to handle some direct sunlight. Place this plant in a north- or east-facing window, or slightly away from a west- or south-facing window, protected from intense afternoon sunlight. Without proper light, Peperomias tend to stretch, losing their color and compact growth habit. In too bright of light, their leaves can burn.
Parallel Peperomia Care
As semi-succulents, Peperomias do best in smaller pots, not needing to be repotted for a few years at a time. Because they are easier to overwater than underwater, excess soil around their roots can lead to root issues. When repotting is necessary, choose a pot with drainage holes that is only slightly larger than the previous pot. Repot using a well-draining soil like a cactus and succulent mix.
Watering Parallel Peperomia
Allow the soil to dry almost completely before watering deeply, until water is coming out the bottom of the pot. Dry soil may need to be watered a couple times before it retains moisture. Make sure the Parallel Peperomia is never sitting in water. The frequency of watering will depend on lighting and temperature, so be sure to always feel the soil prior to watering.
Feeding Parallel Peperomia
Peperomias benefit from regular fertilizing when they are growing the most in the spring and summer. Mix a liquid houseplant fertilizer into your watering routine at least once a month during this time. Be sure to always follow fertilizer dilution instructions to avoid damaging the plant’s roots. Over-fertilizing can do more damage than not fertilizing at all. There is no need to fertilize in the winter when houseplants go mostly dormant.
