- Average Watering Needs
- Mature Height 13-18 Inches
The glossy, tropical-looking leaves of the purple anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum) provide consistent interest, but the blooms of this plant are the real showstoppers. Waxy, palette-shaped purple spathes grow around the actual flower spike The long-lasting blooms last up to three months and are often followed by a similarly long stretch of just vegetative growth before repeating the bloom, although ideal conditions increase bloom frequency. Purple anthurium, known scientifically as Anthurium andreanum goes by several names including flamingo lily or flower, purple plum anthurium, painted anthurium, painter’s palette, tailflower and laceleaf.
Best Locations For Growing Purple Anthurium
The purple anthurium makes a striking addition to any area of the home that is sufficiently warm and well-lit, with as much humidity as possible. A position near an east-facing window that provides early morning light for a few hours is one excellent option. Anthuriums are toxic, so use them carefully or keep them far out of reach of children and pets.
Purple Anthurium Sunlight Requirements
Bright indirect light is best for the purple anthurium. Without sufficient light, the purple anthurium will typically survive but not bloom and will grow slowly. Too much light causes leaf burn and pale foliage.
Purple Anthurium Plant Care
Prune off damaged or dying leaves as they appear and snip off spent flowers. Repot the purple anthurium every two to three years into a slightly larger pot. Use a well-drained, fertile potting soil with ample organic matter.
Watering Purple Anthurium
Keep the purple anthurium soil moist but not wet. Water the plant deeply whenever the top two inches of the soil feel dry to the touch. The purple anthurium is a tropical selection that enjoys high levels of humidity, so regular misting during dry conditions encourages a healthy plant.
Feeding Purple Anthurium
When the purple anthurium is actively growing, use a liquid fertilizer intended for flowering houseplants once per month, diluted according to manufacturer instructions.
