Looking for a succulent to add character and beauty to a desk or hanging pot? If so, the Retusa Hoya is your answer. This semi-rare evergreen, native to India, has elongated, draping stems with green tubular leaves, giving this tropical house plant its name Retusa, or “rounded”, and its particular appearance. Petite, ivory blooms emblazoned with burgundy stars that impart a citrusy perfume cover this plant during the blooming season, which starts in early spring and lasts until late fall.
Best Locations For Growing Retusa Hoya
Any room with ample bright, indirect light, temperatures ranging from 50° to 80°, and moderate humidity of about 40% will suit Retusa Hoya. Since this evergreen is toxic to people and pets, it should be kept out of reach from little hands and paws.
Retusa Hoya Sunlight Requirements
Retusa Hoya thrives in bright, indirect light but can also do well in medium light. Avoid maintaining this tropical evergreen in low light, however, because low light fails to provide enough energy to support this perennial’s moderate growth. A south-facing or east-facing window will provide ample bright light. Just make sure to place your Retusa Hoya a few feet away from any windows with direct light to prevent this succulent from being sunburned.
Retusa Hoya Care
Trim any yellow or dead leaves to promote growth, avert fungal disease, and encourage a bushier shape. If you prefer a leggier plant, however, trim less often. Use the stem cuttings to multiply your Retusa Hoya by placing them in water and watching for roots to form.
Retusa Hoya prefers well-draining potting soil. We recommend amending average potting soil with peat moss and perlite to increase the acidity and aeration for your new topical succulent.
A 5-inch or 6-inch pot will be a great starter home for your new Retusa Hoya. Due to this evergreen’s slow to moderate growth rate, you will need to repot every two years or so. Choose a new pot that is one to two inches bigger than the old pot.
Watering Retusa Hoya
Retusa Hoya is vulnerable to root rot so check the soil before watering. If the soil is dry 2 inches below the surface, then water. If not, wait a day or two to check again.
Feeding Retusa Hoya
In spite of Retusa Hoya being a non-fussy plant, it sometimes requires a little fertilizer during the warmer months. Begin feeding your Retusa Hoya during the spring and continue until the end of summer. A balanced water-soluble fertilizer is beneficial during the growing season, but switching to a low-nitrogen fertilizer at the beginning of the blooming season will help promote flowering until fall.

Plant Shipping
Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.
Winter to Early Spring
We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.
