The Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree is a stately tree with a lush canopy. The botanical name is Quercus acutissima 'Gobbler’, named after the turkeys and other fowl that consume the tree’s small, soft acorns. Mature Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Trees stand 35 to 45 feet tall and wide. The leaves first emerge in the spring in a bright yellowish-green hue. The green lanceolate leaves have serrated edges that come to pronounced points, characteristic of all Sawtooth Oaks. By fall, the leaves transition into a faded green or brown. This Oak variety produces acorns at around six years of age. The acorns are small but incredibly abundant and ripen in the fall.
A central trunk or leader supports the rounded, pyramidal form. The Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree makes an excellent shade tree or accent in a landscape. Plant this Oak along a property line or road to add privacy during the spring, summer, and fall. Grow the Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree in zones 5 through 9.
Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree Care
The ideal location for Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Trees is one where it will receive full sun. Give the tree moist, well-drained soil with an acidic pH. Young trees need consistent moisture to settle in, but established plants are drought tolerant and can typically survive on rainfall alone.
Prune Oaks trees when they are dormant. Late winter to early spring is the best time to shape the tree and remove crossed branches. Winter pruning reduces the risk of disease and pest infestation.
Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree Spacing
Choose a planting area away from utility lines and other overhead obstructions. The Sawtooth Gobbler Oak Tree should be planted 20 feet away from buildings and roads. Space Gobbler Oaks 30 feet away from other trees. The dense canopy creates a partial shade environment that is good for various ground covers.
