Planting Guide
When to Plant
Plant in autumn before the soil freezes so the roots have time to settle in before winter.
Site & Soil
Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of sun each day. Use well-drained soil, adding compost or organic matter if your soil is heavy.
Depth & Spacing
- Plant bulbs with the pointed side up, 6–8 inches deep.
- Leave about 6–8 inches between bulbs for healthy growth and airflow.
Watering After Planting
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Natural winter moisture is usually enough until new growth appears in spring.
Ongoing Care
- Watering: Once growth appears, keep the soil lightly moist. Water deeply about once a week during dry spells.
- Mulch: Add a 2–3 inch layer to hold in moisture and reduce weeds.
- After bloom: Snip off spent flowers, but leave the foliage until it yellows so bulbs can store energy for next year.
Growing in Containers
- Container size: Pick a pot at least 12 inches wide with drainage holes.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix; add gravel at the bottom if needed.
- Planting: Set bulbs 6–8 inches deep, spaced to avoid crowding.
- Care: Place in full sun, water after planting, and keep soil evenly moist while plants grow.
