Split-Leafed Philodendron is an attractive, low-maintenance, tropical plant originating in South America and belonging to the Araceae family. It has large, glossy, deep-green leaves with characteristic splits on the leaf’s edges. Often confused with Monstera deliciosa when the plants are young, Split-Leaf Philodendrons have an entirely different lobed leaf with wavy edges. Split-Leaf Philodendrons grow a tree-like trunk with aerial roots that grow toward the ground to help anchor it.
Best Locations For Growing Split-Leaf Philodendron
Place your Split-Leaf Philodendron in a warm, humid, and bright environment. Be sure to avoid temperatures falling below 55 degrees F. Because Split-Leaf Philodendrons are toxic to pets, place this plant in a location that is difficult for pets to reach. This tropical jungle giant needs plenty of room to spread out – you can stake up your plant to provide vertical support.
Split-Leaf Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
Provide plenty of bright indirect light.
Split-Leaf Philodendron Care
Split-Leaf Philodendron enjoys light, well-draining soil with ample organic matter. Keep your Split-Leaf Philodendron's large leaves free of dust by gently wiping both sides of the leaves with a warm, damp cloth. Long aerial roots may appear toward the base of the plant; you can nip them off or tuck them back into the top of the soil. Division can be done by cutting the thick roots with a serrated knife and potting up the plants separately.
Watering Split-Leaf Philodendron
Allow the top surface of the soil to dry out between waterings, especially during the winter months. When watering, thoroughly soak the soil so water drains out of the bottom of the pot. Provide your Split-Leaf Philodendron with plenty of humidity. Frequent misting of its leaves or using a humidifier will boost moisture in the air and keep this plant happy. This plant can be susceptible to mineral buildup in tap water, so use either filtered or distilled water or leave tap water out for 24 hours to remove impurities.
Feeding Split-Leaf Philodendron
Fertilize monthly spring through fall with a well-balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10, diluted by half the recommended strength. Give fertilization a rest during the winter months.
