For an unusual Dracaena with a twist, look no further than Tornado Dracaena. With its dark-green leaves and lime-yellow margins in a spiral shape, it is bound to draw interest wherever it is placed. As a young plant, Tornado is compact and perfect for growing on a table; with time, it will mature into a floor-standing stemmed plant. The Tornado Dracaena is a great low-maintenance plant that will provide interest for years to come.
Best Locations For Growing Tornado Dracaena
The Tornado Dracaena will happily grow in any room with average room temperatures and humidity levels. However, this plant is toxic to animals and should be grown away from any pets. It is not considered poisonous to humans, but should not be ingested and care should be taken if children are present.
Tornado Dracaena Sunlight Requirements
This plant is tolerant of most lighting conditions and will grow in low to bright indirect light. As with most houseplants, it is best to avoid a south-facing window as the harsh midday sun can damage the foliage.
Tornado Dracaena Care
Over time the lower leaves can turn brown and look unsightly; these dead leaves along with any that are damaged can be cut away with a sharp and clean knife or scissors. The Tornado Dracaena prefers to be kept warm and out of any drafts. Do not let the temperature fall below 55 °F as the plant will struggle, a temperature range of 65-80 °F is recommended. Tolerating normal indoor humidity levels, this plant can also be grown in a dry indoor space but will need regular misting to keep it from drying out.
Watering Tornado Dracaena
The Tornado Dracaena is fairly drought tolerant and should be watered only when the top layer of soil has dried out. After watering, allow the soil to drain completely; overly wet soil can lead to blackening of the foliage tips.
Feeding Tornado Dracaena
Being relatively slow growing, the Tornado Dracaena is not a hungry plant. However, to promote healthy growth, it can be fed monthly from May to September with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half the recommended strength.
