With its stunning heart-shaped foliage that can either climb or trail, the Velvet Philodendron is perfect for adding a touch of jungle to your home or office. Botanically named the Philodendron hederaceum, it is also known affectionately as the Heart-Leaf Philodendron or Sweetheart Plant. Producing long vine-like stems, it can be left to trail from a shelf or encouraged vertically up a moss pole. A really eye-catching plant, especially with its pink leaf undersides.
Best Locations For Growing Velvet Philodendron
As with other philodendrons, the Sweetheart Plant is considered toxic to animals and humans and should be kept away from children and pets. Nevertheless, it will grow well in most rooms as long as it is kept warm and away from direct light.
Velvet Philodendron Sunlight Requirements
The Velvet Philodendron grows best when placed in a spot where it can receive bright light, but just don’t let it be damaged by any harsh direct sunlight, especially during the middle of the day. It can also cope with some shade.
Velvet Philodendron Care
Preferring a warm environment, Velvet Philodendron thrives when grown within a temperature range of 65 to 85°F and is kept away from any radiators and cold drafts. Although this philodendron can cope with average humidity levels, it is happiest when grown on a tray of wet gravel or pebbles and misted every few days, or even grown in a bathroom. Pruning is not generally required except to keep it to size. However, to encourage thicker growth, the growing tips can be pinched out from time to time.
Watering Velvet Philodendron
The Velvet Philodendron has a severe disliking of being overwatered, as this can lead to potential problems with root rot. To prevent overwatering, only water this plant when the top couple of inches of soil are dry and let any excess water drain away.
Feeding Velvet Philodendron
To encourage this plant’s superb foliage, it can be fed monthly during the growing season with a general house plant liquid feed, diluted to half the recommended strength. It does not need to be fed during the winter months when its growth slows.
