The base of this hosta is tightly formed with a billowing crown of leaves that allows closer planting in many different garden features. Come mid-summer, its beauty expands ten-fold with its tall shoots of lilac colored flowers.
The Hosta ‘Fortunei Aureomarginata’ is great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds when it is blooming. Reaching a height of 2’ and a width of 2’-2.5’, this hosta will bring a medium sized element to your garden that will be difficult to resist! Its watering needs also are minimal and this perennial does not require extensive maintenance.
This hosta is an incredible addition to many different elements in any garden. It is best used in mass planting, border planting and container planting. Your creativity will only be amplified with all of the uses of this wonderful hosta within your own garden.
Aureo Marginata Hosta Plant Care
When choosing the right location for your new Aureo-Marginata Hosta, keep in mind that it prefers full shade and will tolerate partial sun. When you make the decision of where to plant your new hosta, keep in mind that full shade will help the soil retain more moisture. Thus, even less maintenance!
Dig a hole that is at least two times the size of the root base of your hosta. Keep the top of the root base level with the surface of the surrounding ground. Plant with nutrient rich and moisture-retaining soil. Adding in 1 part aged compost to 2 parts soil will give your hosta a great start while establishing its roots. Each year after the first season, a light dusting of granular 10-10-10 about three inches from the root base will be sufficient for fertilizing.
Ensure that the soil pH ranges between 6.5-7.5 for best results. Amendments can be found at your local garden center to either alkalize or acidify the soil as needed.
Watering can be minimal if the above steps are followed. In this case, watering may be provided once every 1-2 weeks depending on rainfall. On extremely hot days, it is wise to check the soil to ensure it still contains moisture. Water as needed until the soil is thoroughly moist.
When winter has succumbed and the foliage begins to die back, this is a great time to cut your hosta down to about 2”-3” above the root base. Additional pruning may not be necessary except for leaves that have turned brown during the spring, summer or fall. In the case of brown leaves, cut each affected leaf down to a 0.5” of the root base.
Aureo Marginata Hosta Plant Spacing
With its size of 2’ tall by 2’-2.5’ wide, this hosta makes an incredible mass and border plantings. Space each hosta 2’ on center to create a solid mass or border planting.
For container planting, smaller shade-loving annuals or perennials are best planted at least 6” away from the base of this hosta.
The sky's the limit to how you choose to plant your new hosta and we know you’ll enjoy this beautiful specimen in your garden!
