With Caramel Coral Bells (Heuchera villosa Caramel), bring hummingbirds to even the shadiest areas of your garden. And hummers aren’t the only ones to be attracted to this plant. Its unique yellow, orange, and red leaves provide year-round interest in a tidy but tough perennial. That toughness also translates to easy care.
Growing to only about a foot tall and slightly wider, this coral bells variety tucks into nearly any part or full shade spot. It is hardy in zones 4 through 8, toughing out cold winters and returning. Each summer, flower stalks will rise from the stunning foliage and add small white flowers, just to kick up the color. Plant this versatile little shrub in a woodland garden, rock garden, or along partly shaded paths.
Caramel Coral Bells Care
Choose a spot in the landscape that gets some shade, giving your coral bell no more than about 4 to 6 hours of sun a day. In hotter zones, go for afternoon shade. The plant appreciates regular watering and a little extra irrigation in sunnier spots or hotter days. Make sure the soil is a well-draining mix, but water often enough that it never dries out completely.
After planting, add a layer of compost or mulch around the plant and replenish it in late fall. Remove any sun-damaged leaves, damaged stems, and flower stems in late fall to prepare the plant for winter. In spring, remove any winter damage. Pruning is that simple. If the plant becomes too large for its spot, you can divide it in spring.
Caramel Coral Bells Spacing
Space Caramel Coral Bells about 1.5 feet apart to give it room for air to circulate around the leaves. If forming a border, you can plant them a few inches closer to each other.
