Desert Eve™ Yellow Yarrow is not only the perfect drought-tolerant plant, but it also sports showy lemon-yellow flowers from summer to the first frost in fall. Those fluffy flowerheads will attract all pollinators to your garden and are perfect for adding a shot of color to a naturalized or cultivated garden border. Achillea millefolium ’DESYEL’ has a densely branched habit that needs little maintenance after planting and is a great first-time native plant for new gardeners.
Insects, hummingbirds, butterflies, and moths are all attracted to the yarrow's nectar during its exceptionally long flowering season. Adding yarrow to a kitchen garden helps to attract pollinators and increase yields of some fruits and vegetables. The first flowers appear late in spring as the spring bulbs and early perennials are winding down for the year. The brilliant color and strong straight stems of yarrow flowers are fabulous for cut or dried flower arrangements and should be included in a cut-flower garden design. Deer avoid browsing the ferny foliage and flowers, and rabbits are rarely a nuisance for yarrow.
Desert Eve™ Yellow Yarrow Care
Plant yarrow in a location with good drainage year-round. Avoid areas with seasonal flooding, which can cause root rot. Full sun is needed for vigorous flowering and dense growth. The soil pH should be slightly acidic to slightly alkaline. Provide consistent water after planting to establish a strong root system. After establishing, yarrow is extremely drought tolerant, only needing supplemental watering during long stretches of heat and drought. Fertilizing is rarely needed for yarrow. Overfeeding with high-nitrogen formulas encourages dense foliage growth at the expense of flower formation.
Desert Eve™ Yarrow does not require pruning or pinching. The plants naturally develop dense branching and are not likely to set many viable seeds. Remove any spent growth in the spring as new green growth emerges. Leaving the top growth through the winter not only helps to protect the growing crown but also allows non-migrating birds and other small animals to use the plant for shelter and food. Divide yarrow every 2-3 years to encourage vigorous growth and increase your plant stock.
Desert Eve™ Yellow Yarrow Spacing
Desert Eve™ Yarrow has a medium growth habit of 14-18 inches tall and wide. Space plants 12 inches apart when planting among other perennials or in multiples. Single plants grown in containers will require at least an 8-inch diameter pot.
