Plants Included In Early Riser Annual Combination
What a neat combination of annual foliage and flowering plants! Icy colors will cool even the sunniest location on your porch or patio. Shooting up, billowing out and draping over your container, these three unique annuals will make an early riser out of you, prompting you to enjoy your first cup of coffee on the patio to admire these divas of the annual world. This combination begs to be potted up in a medium to tall patio planter and placed where you can enjoy its contrasting textures and growth habits.
Thrill, spill and fill...that’s the goal for creating the most spectacular container planters. Dichondra is a desert native foliar that can take the heat and poor, dry soil and make it look wonderful. Trailing up to 48 inches, it will catapult out of your container and spill over the side. In contrast, Salvia will shoot up 30 to 40 inches and will thrill you with small intense blue flower spikes and deep green mint-like leaves. Not to be forgotten here is the petunia, which will fill your container with icy white blooms about 24 inches tall and then cascade down the side.
Early Riser Annual Combination Care
Care and maintenance of this terrific trio could not be easier as dichondra and salvia are famous for their ability to survive in extreme drought conditions and bounce back. Since petunia does not like wet soil, this is a combination that requires just a little from you and gives a ton back. Good average potting soil, a controlled release fertilizer to get everything established, and a regular application of a water soluble fertilizer throughout the season will make these annuals happy. Water only when dry in the top two inches of soil and that’s it!
Due to their vigorous growth and ultimate mature size, use a 14 inch planter for this trio. Space plants at least 12 inches apart with the salvia to the background and the dichondra and petunia on opposing sides in front for the most attractive arrangement. The larger pot size plants that are available will require a larger container so plan accordingly. These are improved hybrids, so no reseeding here. No deadheading is required, but you may want to give all three a trim throughout the season to encourage branching and increased vigor.
Early Riser Annual Combination Ideas
Although uniquely suited for patio container living, these plants also make a wonderful addition to your garden bed or landscape border. They will respond to well draining soil and a full sun location with a little afternoon shade in the hottest regions. Fertilize when first established, and then only periodically throughout the summer for best performance.
