Growing Zones
Few landscape shrubs match the year-round interest of the Flaming Silver Pieris. Fragrant, white flowers appear in spring. As a backdrop to these small, bell-shaped flowers, the new leaves emerge bright red before aging to pink and eventually turning green with silver-white edges. The leaves are glossy and stay on the plant throughout the winter. This plant is a vigorous cultivar of Pieris japonica, also known as Japanese andromeda, Japanese pieris, or lily-of-the-valley shrub.
In addition to its good looks, Flaming Silver also offers resistance to deer and prefers a location with partial shade. It is considered a medium-sized shrub with an upright, oval form once mature. Position the pieris near trees and shrubs with coarser or finer foliage than the pieris to create a balanced look in the landscape. Use this Japanese native in hedges, mixed borders, and foundation plantings.
Flaming Silver Pieris Care
Flaming Silver pieris grows best in part shade in a site that is protected from harsh winter winds. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base of the shrub to protect the root zone in winter and conserve soil moisture in hot, dry weather. Once established, this pieris has average watering requirements, calling for about 1 inch of water per week while the shrub is actively growing. The ideal soil for Flaming Silver is evenly moist, well drained, fertile, and acidic. Alkaline soils or poor nutrition can lead to leaf yellowing, so plan to fertilize the pieris annually in early spring with a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving plants.
Prune this plant just after it finishes flowering in late spring. Cut branches back to just above a set of leaves. Pieris benefits from protection against harsh winter weather, so consider planting it where it will not experience high winds, and apply mulch around the root zone.
Flaming Silver Pieris Spacing
Flaming Silver Pieris grows 6-8 feet tall with a similar spread. Space multiple plants about 6 feet apart for hedges or mass plantings, or give individual plants more room if you want to use them as accents or specimens.
