Flirt Nandina (Nandina domestica ‘Murasaki’), also known as Heavenly Bamboo, is a compact evergreen shrub prized for its brilliant foliage color. New leaves emerge a vibrant deep red in spring and maintain their rich tones throughout summer and fall. As the season progresses, mature foliage takes on a soft bluish-green, creating a striking contrast. Its low, spreading habit makes it a versatile choice for borders, informal hedges, groundcovers, rock gardens, or slopes where erosion control is needed.
This dwarf nandina variety offers year-round beauty with minimal care, making it a favorite for both residential and commercial landscapes. Its colorful foliage provides a bold accent when mass planted, and it pairs well with other shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses in mixed plantings.
Flirt Nandina Care
Plant in well-drained soil for best results. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Once established, Flirt Nandina is drought tolerant and requires only occasional supplemental water. Fertilize in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to encourage vibrant foliage. If needed, prune back to the ground in early spring to rejuvenate growth.
Flirt Nandina Growth & Spacing
Flirt Nandina typically grows 1 to 2 feet tall with a spread of 1.5 to 2 feet. For borders, space plants 3 to 4 feet apart. When using as a groundcover or to create a low hedge, space 2 feet apart, measuring from the center of each plant.
