Growing Zones
Flirt Nandina produces deep red new growth on a truly dwarf evergreen shrub. Nandina domestica 'Murasaki' stays compact at about 1 to 2 feet tall and 1.5 to 2 feet wide, so it fits easily along walkways, foundation edges, and small garden beds. The wine-red foliage slowly matures to dark green with a bluish cast, then deepens again in cool weather. Our landscape designer uses it when a planting needs low color that lasts beyond a short bloom season.
‘Murasaki’ means purple in Japanese, a nod to the darker tones in the new growth. Flirt Nandina rarely flowers or fruits, so the foliage carries the display with far less berry concern than older nandina types. The dense, mounded habit works well as edging, a groundcover-style drift, a container shrub, or a compact accent in cottage, winter, and Asian-inspired gardens. It is generally resistant to deer, heat and humidity, and drought tolerant once established.
Flirt Nandina Care
Plant Flirt Nandina in part shade to full sun, with stronger red coloring usually developing in brighter light. It grows in clay, loam, and silt as long as drainage is good. Slightly acidic, humus-rich, well-drained soil supports the best foliage color, although this shrub adapts to average garden conditions.
Water deeply after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Established plants can handle occasional dry spells, but prolonged drought may thin the foliage or dull the color. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer, using a light hand in fertile soil. A mulch layer helps steady soil moisture and protects roots, especially in colder Zone 6 gardens.
Flirt Nandina does not need regular pruning to keep its low mound. In late winter or early spring, remove damaged stems or selectively shorten stray growth to refine the outline. For older plants that become crowded, cut a few stems at the base to encourage fresh shoots from below.
Flirt Nandina Spacing
Space Flirt Nandina 18 to 24 inches apart for edging, mass planting, or low groundcover coverage. Use the closer spacing when a bed needs quicker fill along a walkway or patio. In containers, choose a pot at least 12 to 14 inches wide with drainage holes, and water more often than you would in the ground.
At the front of a part-shade planting, Flirt Nandina can run beneath pieris shrubs or leucothoe, giving the bed low red foliage while the larger evergreens add height. Sedge and creeping liriope make practical neighbors in moist soil if the planting needs fine-textured ground coverage. For a container, set Flirt Nandina slightly off-center with wishbone flowers or lobelia along the rim for seasonal color in filtered light.
