Irises are showy due to the center upright petals known as standards, and the falls, or the lower petals that hang down. The Halston German Bearded Iris or Iris germanica 'Halston' is all the more stunning because it is a deep silky shade of purple. White accents on the flanges add more color and dimension. The flowers emerge in the spring, and the Halston German Bearded Iris blooms again in the fall for a repeat performance.
The Halston German Bearded Iris is a moderate grower with an upright, clump-forming growth habit. The blue-green, lance-shaped foliage provides a nice balance to the lovely flowers. Plant the Halston German Bearded Iris in beds or borders. The fragrant blooms also make excellent cut flowers. Select a spot close to a porch or patio so the sight and scent of the flowers can be enjoyed. Butterflies are drawn to the flowers, but deer and rabbits generally leave this iris alone. Grow this iris in zones 3 through 10.
Halston German Bearded Iris Care
Halston German Bearded Iris grows best in full to partial sun and moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to alkaline. This plant has average water needs and once mature, only needs water during a dry period. Fertilize irises in the spring using a balanced plant food or a product with low nitrogen.
Remove faded flowers to encourage another flush of bloom near the end of summer or early fall. Trim back growth in the fall when the leaves fully die back. Traditionally, gardeners trim the foliage to create a triangle shape with the center leaves left taller than the outer foliage. A fall pruning removes any pests or fungi, ensuring a healthy growing season next spring.
Halston German Bearded Iris Spacing
The Halston German Bearded Iris will reach 20 to 30 inches tall and one to two feet across. Create a full and continuous planting by spacing these irises as close as 24 inches apart. Spread the plants 48 inches apart to introduce space and give the plants room to spread.
