As a breeze blows by, a brilliant blanket of gold suddenly appears etched in crimson. You can recreate this visual spectacle repeatedly from summer until fall by planting Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed in your yard. While this herbaceous perennial’s name may not so adequately reflect its beauty, its flowers and foliage do. Otherwise known as Helenium autumnale HayDay™ Gold Bicolor, this perennial features delicate, daisy-like florets consisting of dual-colored petals, gold on top and crimson underneath. Along with the slender, oval-shaped verdant leaves, Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed is a perfect choice to provide color, texture, and dimension to any garden. Birds, butterflies, and your neighbors carrying scissors will flock to this perennial! Reaching a maximum height and spread of only 14 to 18 inches, this compact perennial serves borders and small spaces well.
Growing upright, Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed is disease resistant. Deer resistant too, these stems of gold are safe from critters wanting to munch all day and night. Originating from North America, Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed is low maintenance, making it perfect for any busy newbie gardener. And don’t worry about having to hear gesundheit every time you cut one and take it inside; the “Sneezeweed” part of its name simply refers to its ancestors being used as snuff a long, long time ago.
Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed Care
Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed thrives when planted in moist, loamy soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7.4. A sun-worshiper, this wildflower does best when exposed to six hours of full sun. Possessing average watering needs, one inch of water per week is preferred. As long as the soil is not devoid of most nutrients, fertilize this perennial only once a year. Feed with a balanced fertilizer during early spring.
To encourage bushier growth, pinch Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed during the spring. Hayday™ is a pollinator’s treasure that produces cut-flower quality blooms in late summer. To extend the bloom time, deadhead spent flowers once the blooming season begins. After the flowering season has concluded, cut back the flowers and stems to a few inches.
Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed Spacing
Hayday™ Gold Bicolor Sneezeweed looks beautiful when grown in a bed or a border. Mass plantings of this compact perennial produce the most dramatic effect regarding color. Space these dainty bi-colored beauties 14 to 18 inches apart. If planning to bring this cut flower’s striking beauty inside throughout the autumn, plant other fall bloomers such as sunflowers and sedum. Combined, all three will produce gorgeous bouquets.
