Growing Zones
The Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine is a vigorous grower and bloomer. Also known as Campsis x tagliabuana 'Rutcam,' this vining plant has lovely red flowers. The extended, trumpet-shaped flowers have scalloped ends that flare open. The flowers bloom in clusters, creating a dense curtain of blooms. Flowers bloom from late spring until fall weather turns chilly.
Trumpet Vine is a North American native that is incredibly easy to maintain. It pushes out reaching vines, so landscape plants need a trellis or arbor to climb. Plant the Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine along a fence or shed, and the stems will hide the structure. Include this plant in a container, and the stems will cascade and latch onto a nearby building or other structure within reach. Sweltering summer weather is not an issue for this vining beauty. Pollinators, especially hummingbirds and butterflies, are also enthralled by the stunning flowers.
Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine Care
For best results, place this Trumpet Vine in full sun. The Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine is drought tolerant, but blooms best with water during an extended dry period, especially when grown in a container. This plant can live in low-quality soil, but for best results, give it rich, moist, and well-drained soil. Fertilizer is unnecessary because this plant is not a heavy feeder, but a slow-release fertilizer in the spring will start the growing season strong.
Prune in spring as the plant wakes up from dormancy to remove damaged growth. Deadhead the plant to keep it looking nice and encourage even more flowers. Shape the plant in the fall after the flowers fade to remove woody stems and overgrowth.
Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine Spacing
The Hot Lips® Trumpet Vine can reach 40 feet long and 10 feet wide. Space plants 10 feet apart so the vines have room to grow. Grow one plant in an 18-inch-wide container.
