Here is one of those annual foliage plants that gardeners can’t do without. Lemon Coral Sedum is a bright green foliar with a mounding, spilling habit that makes it the perfect complement to a container, garden borders and landscaping. Planted as the foundation of your large containers, it will spill over the edge attractively and the chartreuse green spiky looking stems and needles will contrast beautifully with intense bright colors. Although it looks spiky and rough, it is considered a succulent with soft and silky needles and stems.
The origin of this particular species of sedum is not certain, but most sedums originate in Asia, Zones 7a to 11b. It is one of the first plants that can go out in the spring after the danger of the last frost has passed in Zones 3-6, and if you are lucky, you may be able to see bright yellow flowers in the spring. This plant is primarily grown for its foliage, though. It is heat and drought tolerant.
Lemon Coral Sedum Care
Sedum grows in well drained soil kept moderately moist. Although drought tolerant, this annual will give you the best performance with some light shade and adequate moisture. A once a season fertilization for in ground landscape plants, and a regular feeding regimen for container plantings will keep its foliage lush and green. It prefers a soil pH of 5.8 to 6.2.
Deadheading is not required. Pinching back to reduce the sprawl that happens when planted as the foundation plant in large containers can be done, but why not enjoy the almost 18 inch cascade down the side of the container, or over rocks in a rock garden? Pinching back will create more branching and result in a fuller mounding plant. Cuttings root easily so creating additional plantings of S. mexicanum is easy.
Lemon Coral Sedum Spacing
Growing to about 10 inches tall and 14 inches wide, give Lemon Coral about 8 to 12 inches space from other plants. This will allow S. mexicanum to spread out and create that filler foliage interest you want, and help to reduce any plant diseases. Lemon Coral is not typically bothered by many destructive insects. Bees and moths are attracted to its early spring flowers. Pair with pelargonium, verbena, portulaca, mandevilla, salvia and other annuals for spring to fall color show.
