Luminary™ Sunset Coral Tall Garden Phlox is a great mid-sized plant for the garden border. The shocking orange flowers cover sturdy, dense stems from early to late summer, with little maintenance. The intense color can be used either to contrast cool blues and purples or complement an intense jewel-toned design with a dramatic effect. Phlox paniculata is not only showy but also has a fantastic scent that can perfume a room with just a few cut stems.
Luminary™ Sunset Coral is the most mildew resistant of all the Tall Garden Phloxes while attracting all kinds of beneficial pollinators with its sweet nectar. Sunset Coral is an excellent filler for mixed seasonal containers. The dense foliage stays clean all summer, adding a lovely backdrop for other thrillers and spillers. Plant it in areas with early spring bulbs. The lush foliage and profuse blooming will camouflage and hide the spent or dying bulb foliage of daffodils and tulips.
Luminary™ Sunset Coral Tall Phlox Care
Plant Sunset Coral in a location that receives full to part sun and has well-draining soil. Average soil texture and fertility are acceptable, as is just about any soil pH. Heavy clay soil is not tolerated by phlox and will cause root rot, especially over the winter in cold, wet soil. Amend heavy, compact soils with compost before planting. Fertilize Tall Garden Phlox early in the spring with a granular, slow-release formulation for blooming plants. A higher ratio of phosphorous will encourage and support heavy flowering.
Deadhead any spent flower spikes throughout the summer to keep the plants tidy. A one-time shearing can be done in mid-summer. This will rejuvenate the whole plant and set the stage for a second flush of blooms late in the summer that will last through the fall. Clean-up of the spent top growth is best done in early spring as the new growth of this herbaceous perennial appears. Leaving the top growth over the winter protects the growth crown and will decompose to add nutrients back to the soil.
Luminary™ Sunset Coral Tall Garden Phlox Spacing
Sunset Coral Tall Garden Phlox reaches 30-32 inches in height and width. The plants will need to be spaced 32 inches apart on the center for adequate air circulation. Containers should be at least 10 inches in diameter for single specimen plants.
