Growing Zones
The Montauk Daisy has classic good looks and makes a charming addition to a landscape. Three-inch wide flowers have pure white petals that encircle the bright yellow center. The elliptical petals of the Nipponanthemum nipponicum have rounded ends and bloom from September until frost. While the flowers are the main attraction, the foliage is also stunning. Glossy, deep green leaves densely grow on the stems, giving this plant a full appearance.
This is a full, upright plant with a mounded growth habit. Plant in beds, borders, or mass plantings. The lustrous foliage provides summertime interest, but the fall-blooming flowers can complement the traditional autumnal hues or make it easy to hold onto a summer vibe for a bit longer. The Montauk Daisy is a hardy perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.
Montauk Daisy Care
Montauk Daisy prefers full sun, but afternoon shade can be a nice change of pace in warm climates. Drainage is important, because this plant does not like to be soggy. Plant this beauty in rich, acidic soil that allows for good drainage. The Montauk Daisy likes to dry out and rainfall is typically enough to support this plant. Water this plant during a drought to support healthy growth. Feed using balanced fertilizer during the spring, especially if grown in poor-quality soil. Too much fertilizer can make the plant leggy.
Prune the plant back in spring to encourage more dense, branched growth. The Montauk Daisy is a herbaceous perennial and growth can be cut back in the late fall or early spring.
Montauk Daisy Spacing
This beauty has a shrub-like appearance and will grow 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Space plants 3 to 5 feet apart to create a consistent hedge or continuous look.
