Abelia is a landscaping classic, with its low maintenance, adaptability to soil types, and ability to handle periods of drought. Mucho Gusto™ Abelia is an excellent addition to the Abelia collection, providing a softer option than some of its more boldly colored counterparts. This shrub features soft, pointed, silvery green leaves with creamy white margins and tubular white flowers. Abelia is a hardy shrub that responds to light pruning and shaping with fuller growth and additional blooms.
With its relatively short height of 2-3.5 feet and 3-5-foot spread, the Mucho Gusto™ Abelia makes an attractive, low-growing hedge, though it can be planted alone as well. Abelias generally are disease-free and are deer and rabbit resistant. Abelia is also considered a semi-evergreen, often keeping their leaves through the winter in milder regions. This shrub’s drought tolerance and ease of care make it a popular choice among landscapers and plant enthusiasts alike.
Mucho Gusto™ Abelia Care
Abelias grow best with regular watering, benefiting from deep waterings at least once a week, though they can do just fine with short periods of drought. Grow this shrub in full sun to part shade for best results. In hotter regions, the Mucho Gusto™ Abelia will appreciate a bit of afternoon shade. To plant the Mucho Gusto™ Abelia, dig a hole that is twice the width and of equal depth as the root ball. Abelias do best in well-draining soil, so amend as necessary and provide mulch to help retain moisture.
Prune Mucho Gusto™ Abelia in late winter or early spring as new growth arrives. Be sure to remove any damaged or dead branches to provide better air flow and encourage new growth. Old flowers can be trimmed off as they fade, also encouraging additional flowering. Add a slow-release perennial or shrub fertilizer to the soil around Mucho Gusto™ in the early spring to provide lasting nutritional support. If kept in a container, it is a good idea to bring it into a garage in the winter to prevent cold damage to the roots.
Mucho Gusto™ Abelia Spacing
Plant the Mucho Gusto™ Abelia 3-5 feet away from other plants to allow it room to spread. This spreading habit makes the Mucho Gusto™ Abelia ideal for use as a hedge, and plants can be placed slightly closer together to accomplish this look faster.
