Another gorgeous color in the Nonstop series, Nonstop Orange Tuberous Begonia is a knock out with its bright orange fully double blooms that go on and on all summer long. Dark green heart shaped leaves with a serrated edge complement the intense orange glow from the 2-3 inch double bloom to brighten your partial to full shade garden or container. Bring that tropical feel to your patio or landscape garden with Nonstop Orange Begonias.
Begonias are native to Bolivia, NW Argentina and Peru, Zones 10a through 11b. They are grown as annuals in all other zones, with the ability to lift the tubers before they are killed by frost and store them over winter in a cool dark place, ready to plant again in spring. These beautiful flowers grow in higher elevations, so are suited for cool summer regions. Temperatures in the 65 to 70 range will make your blossoming beauties feel right at home.
Nonstop® Orange Begonia Care
Begonia care begins with the proper location of your garden bed. Begonias do best in deep shade during the hottest part of the day, but enjoy sun or light shade in the morning or late afternoon. Soil must be well draining as this plant does not tolerate wet feet and should be slightly acidic at 5.5 to 6.0 pH. Plant at the base of a high tree on the woodland edge or in hanging baskets on your porch overhang for best control over sun exposure. Sunlight will scorch begonias if too intense. Fertilize monthly with a diluted water soluble fertilizer for healthy green growth and repeat flowering.
Deadheading is not necessary but good housekeeping is. Remove spent blooms from soil level to reduce any insect infestations or soil borne diseases. Pruning when first established will promote more flowering, but reserve most of this activity for removing dead or yellowed leaves or to relieve overcrowding as this can promote powdery mildew which tends to plaque begonias in general.
Nonstop® Orange Begonia Spacing
Tuberous begonias are an upright medium grower, topping out at about 12 inches tall and spreading about 16 inches wide. Give plants 12 to 16 inches of space in between to encourage air circulation and reduce incidence of disease or insect activity. Pair tuberous begonias with other shade loving annuals like sweet potato vine, lobelia, torenia, coleus or choose from the 23 additional colors in the Nonstop Tuberous Begonia series for an incredible explosion of color all summer long.
