Celebrate and enjoy your happy place! Paint the Town Red Dianthus enlivens all of the senses. Typically Dianthus are known as Pinks. These flowers are a classic design element in English cottages style gardens. With a bit of creativity, combine bright annual colors typical of geraniums, petunias, or verbena with Dianthus to complement even a small urban garden. The leaves and stems radiate a beautiful blue glaucous hue that is in a mounded habit. You will be mesmerized by its frilly flowers rich magenta color that produce bloom after nonstop bloom.
Both foliage and flowers emit a sweet and spicy fragrance that is unique and alluring especially to pollinator friends. Deer are deterred by its scent. This is a tough plant that is heat, drought, and salt tolerant. The advantage of being a native to Europe and Asia is that there are fewer disease and insect issues. The most common issue to run into is mildew spots on leaves.
Paint the Town Red Pinks Dianthus Care
Only 6 or more hours of sunlight will produce amazing blooms. Deadheading will help to keep blooms in top condition. Dianthus tolerates soil moist but not soggy. It prefers fertile soil slightly alkaline to neutral. Average watering practices are recommended and short periods of drought are tolerable. Watering toward the base of the plant to reduce mildew spots on leaves. Add an application of compost or fertilizer to help rejuvenate growth annually.
Dianthus is a perennial hardy to zones 4 to 9. A trim after flowers are spent and another Fall shearing by half will keep growth compact. The leaves stay green all year, and adding extra mulch will help it survive the winter. Pull back excess mulch once Spring soils begin to warm to avoid root rot.
Paint the Town Red Pinks Dianthus Spacing
Spacing 16 to 18 inches is ideal when planting in the landscape. Dianthus works as a filler in containers. Experiment with the many diverse ways to enjoy its beauty. Add these plants to flower boxes on balconies or exploit their bright colors to uplift a boring rock garden. You really can’t go wrong!
