The Pineapple Sage Plant, or Salvia elegans, is a bushy plant with a rounded form. Elongated red flowers bloom on tall spikes by summer’s end. The plant has a slight pineapple fragrance and adds a fruity flavor to drinks and meals. The leaves can be harvested at any time.
Pineapple Sage Plant Care
Pineapple Sage Plants like sunny, warm conditions, so plant outside after there is no longer a chance of frost. The soil should be rich, moist, and well drained because this stunner does not tolerate wet feet. While this plant thrives in full sun, a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.
Growing Pineapple Sage Plant
Mature plants will reach 24 to 36 inches tall and may need to be staked to stand up. Plants will spread 24 to 36 inches wide and should be spaced at least 24 inches apart. Pineapple This sage is not cold hardy, so start plants indoors and wait until after the last frost to plant them outside. Move them back inside in the fall if you want to keep the plant over the winter.
Pineapple Sage is an excellent container plant. Choose a pot 16 to 18 inches in diameter with drainage holes. Plants in containers will need rich soil and full sun, and more frequent watering. Water daily or when the top couple inches of soil are dry.
Watering Pineapple Sage Plant
This plant is drought tolerant, but the foliage may wilt in dry conditions, so water the plant when the top few inches of soil are dry or if the plant shows signs of dehydration. Potted plants need water when the top 2 to 3 inches of soil are dry.
Feeding Pineapple Sage Plant
Plants grown in rich soil with high organic content will not need fertilizer. Feed plants in low-quality soil using a balanced plant food every few weeks during the growing season.
