Phlox is a flowering favorite known to bloom from spring through the first frost. The Safari™ Dawn South African Phlox is adorned with bicolor flowers that are soft pink and fade to yellow near the base of the petals. This long-blooming plant is an excellent filler in containers, and the delicate stems can trail up to 8 inches. This mounding Phlox can grow to heights of 12 inches, and it will thrive in part sun.
The Safari™ Dawn South African Phlox is a variety of Jamesbrittenia native to South Africa. This plant is heat-tolerant, meaning it is more than capable of handling summer heat. Phlox makes a beautiful addition to borders, landscapes, and containers while also looking stunning when used as a mass planting. The Safari™ Dawn South African Phlox grows in USDA zones 10 and 11 as a perennial and is often grown as an annual in other zones.
Safari™ Dawn South African Phlox Plant Care
Phlox is an excellent choice for areas that receive part sun. Typically areas that receive 4 to 6 hours of light per day can easily sustain this plant. Avoid sites that receive more light which can burn the foliage—water when the top few inches of soil dry out and use well-draining soil. Phlox is not very picky about soil and can handle pH levels that are acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
This plant is not a heavy feeder. Fertilize when planting in the spring and again halfway through the growing season to maintain healthy landscape plantings. Container plants need more frequent feeding, and applying a water-soluble fertilizer every other month will promote new growth and plenty of blooms. The extra boost of nutrition can help carry the plants through the end of the summer and ensure a steady flow of flowers. It is common for plants to look tired or overgrown by late summer, and if this happens, trimming back ⅓ of the growth can freshen up the look and promote new branching and blooms.
Safari™ Dawn South African Phlox Plant Spacing
Phlox are mounding plants which means they grow up and out. A mature Phlox will be about 6 to 12 inches tall and spread out 12 to 24 inches from the base of the plant. Space Phlox 6 to 10 inches apart to create a lush carpet of foliage and flowers once the mature plants fill in. When grown in a container or hanging basket, the stems will cascade over the edge of the container and trail about 8 inches.
