The Shasta Doublefile Viburnum or Viburnum plicatum is a three-season stunner known for being a vigorous grower. Flat-top flowers bloom in 6-inch wide clusters, and by late spring, this plant will be in full bloom. The white flowers are showy and extend out from the branches in double rows. By midsummer, the flowers transition to bright red berries that later settle into a black hue later in the season. The broad dark green foliage has very pronounced veining and turns burgundy with hints of purple during the fall.
This perennial shrub has a multi-stemmed, spreading growth habit. It is full and lush and makes a striking specimen or can be used to create an eye-catching hedge or foundation planting. Feature the Shasta Doublefile Viburnum in beds or any sunny area in need of color. Birds will stop by when the berries emerge. This plant grows as a perennial in USDA zones 5 through 8.
Shasta Doublefile Viburnum Care
This stunner needs partial to full sun. Shasta Doublefile Viburnum is not very picky about the soil, as long as it is moist and well-drained. Water when the top several inches of soil feels dry, especially during the first growing season.
Encourage new growth and plenty of blooms by feeding this plant a slow-release fertilizer during the spring. This plant blooms on old wood, so trim as needed after the flowers fade to ensure abundant flowers next year.
Shasta Doublefile Viburnum Spacing
The Shasta Doublefile Viburnum is a large plant that will grow 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide. Space shrubs 8 to 10 feet apart when planting a hedge or continuous planting.
