Take a summer powerhouse, turn the heat up to high-octane orange, and you have this bold and beautiful coneflower, Sombrero Flamenco Orange. Flamenco Orange will be the star of your sunny borders and containers drawing bees, birds, and butterflies galore to the party. Seeming to be lit from within, it glows in shades of coral, punctuated with a mahogany cone against green foliage Flamenco Orange adds not only beauty to your garden and as a cut flower, but nutrition to bees, butterflies, birds, and other crucial pollinators supporting our ecosystem. Echinacea are also resistant to deer. Easy care, plus heat and drought tolerant blooms keep coming until frost with deadheading.
Upright, with a height of only 20 inches, Flamenco Orange coneflower is compact enough to fit into smaller beds and containers. A star in a sun-baked container or unforgettable massed in a border or on a hillside. Flamenco Orange hails from the vigorous and reliable Sombrero series of American native echinacea hybrids. The series is compact, freely branched, and early blooming, extending the impressive echinacea bloom season even more. If you leave the seed heads up over the winter, the neighborhood songbirds will love you for it.
Sombrero® Flamenco Orange Coneflower Care
Flamenco Orange is hardy from zones 4-9. Echinaceas prefer a lean to average-fertility soil in a full-sun location. They are drought-tolerant, but regular moisture, especially during high temperatures, will ensure the most consistent growth and bloom. This series is relatively fast-growing.
Drainage is a key factor for echinaceas’ happiness and survival year to year. They cannot sit in overly wet soil, particularly while dormant in winter. If planting in containers, take care that pots are well-drained. Raised beds will be an excellent choice for mass planting if the native soil is poorly drained.
In areas with wet, mild winters, it is recommended to leave stems uncut over the winter until new growth appears to prevent root rot, and consider mulching with gravel to repel winter moisture. Coneflowers do not need much in the way of fertilizer; compost or slow-release fertilizer at planting time and again in spring should be sufficient.
Sombrero® Flamenco Orange Coneflower Spacing
Flamenco Orange will grow about 20-24” tall and wide, so that range is an excellent choice for spacing, especially in a border grouping.
