Sparkle White Wand Flower is known by other common names such as Whirling Butterfly and its botanical name of Gaura. Whatever you call it, this long-lasting bloomer makes other easy-care perennials look like divas. Sparkle White Wand Flower virtually needs no maintenance during the growing season to remain in bloom. The long wispy flower stems seem to reproduce nonstop with delicate, white, butterfly-shaped flowers that dance around in the slightest breeze.
Gaura ‘Sparkle White’ is a natural addition to wildflower meadows, cottage gardens, or transitional zones of rain gardens. The slightly pink-blushed white flowers attract scores of beneficial pollinators from early summer to late fall. The blue-green foliage is not damaged by slugs, snails, deer, or rabbits and makes a great contrast to other perennials, such as ornamental grasses and coneflowers.
Sparkle White Wand Flower Care
Plant Sparkle White in well-draining soils. Heavy clay soil is not suitable for Gaura. The roots need to have excellent drainage all year round. Ensure new plants receive one inch of natural rain or supplemental irrigation per week. As Gaura establishes a robust root system, the plant will become drought tolerant and will require minimal extra watering. Fertilize with a mulch of organic compost applied in the spring.
No pruning or deadheading is required as the plants produce new blooms continuously. Cut back the previous year's growth late in the winter to clean up plants. Allowing the spent foliage to remain over the winter provides shelter for wildlife in the garden and protects the crown from severe winter weather. Gaura grown from seed blooms well the first year and can be grown as an annual plant in colder USDA zones. This plant is a perennial in zones 6-8.
Sparkle White Wand Flower Spacing
Despite their compact frame, Wand Flowers have a lot of impact. The mature height and spread are 12-15 inches. Space plants 12 inches apart owhen planting in large groups.
