A tough, easy to care for full sun perennial, Sunsparkler Dream Dazzler Stonecrop Sedum gives a full season of color with its evergreen pink and purple/green foliage with a hot pink margin and then you get flowers! Large clusters of fuchsia pink flowers appear in late summer, blooming for up to 7 or more weeks, well into the fall. Very attractive to butterflies, this would make a wonderful pollinator garden inhabitant, or a thrilling resident of a rock garden or rock terrace with its spilling habit. This is one ground cover that keeps giving all year around!
Sedum rupestre is native to central and western Europe and grows in mountainous regions on rocky or stony ledges. A tough perennial for Zones 4 to 9, it will grow everywhere in the Lower 48 with the exception of the extreme hottest southern portions of the United States. It will withstand sub zero temperatures as easily as hot humid sun, making this the most versatile ground cover for a full sun garden that you can find. Deer and rabbits typically won’t browse on it, and if they do, it will resist much damage so keep the bees and butterflies busy and the other critters looking elsewhere for food with this hardy perennial.
Sunsparkler® Dream Dazzler Stonecrop Sedum Care
A full sun location will bring out the best colors in Dream Dazzler, although they will appreciate some light afternoon shade in the hottest Southern locations. Plant in well draining soil, even a gravelly soil with little nutrients works for these plants. Once established this plant can go months without appreciable rainfall and is therefore very drought hardy. Water when first planting to encourage good root growth, but then leave it alone. Fertilize extremely poor soil once in the springtime with a granular general purpose fertilizer and water it in well. If in more fertile soil, no fertilizer is generally needed. Preferring a soil pH range of 5.8 to 6.2, you may have to amend particularly rocky soils to reach that range.
Deadheading is not needed, but a good shear after the flowers fade in the fall will clean up the plant and make it look great. Remove any debris from the ground to prevent plant diseases and critters from finding a home. Mulching is not needed for winter protection. This really is a set it and forget it type of perennial, although you will not soon forget the bright colors of this evergreen ground cover, and appreciate it for months with little to no additional care from you.
Sunsparkler® Dream Dazzler Stonecrop Sedum Spacing
Space plants about 12 to 18 inches apart. Growing to about 8 inches high but spreading out to 18 inches, you will find that you want to give it room to grow. This is a low growing ground cover that spreads and forms a mat, crowding out weeds as it goes. Divide it every other year or as needed in the spring before fresh new growth starts. Whether you plant this as a spiller over a terrace or rock wall, as an edging or landscape border in your full sun location, you are going to want to plant several of them for the full effect that this surprisingly colored perennial will give you. You gotta have this plant in your garden this spring!
