Up your container game with the Superbells® Double Twilight™ Calibrachoa. This lush plant is covered in double-petal flowers from spring through fall, and what’s more, the flowers feature an ombre look with lavender petals that gradually fade to a deep, dark purple near the center. The stems of this trailing beauty can cascade up to 30 inches, making it a dramatic addition to hanging baskets. An abundance of beautiful blooms and a sprawling habit make the Calibrachoa a summer-time favorite of many gardeners.
Calibrachoa are mounding trailing plants, which means they are more wide than tall. The stems naturally spread and cascade, making this plant very well suited to containers and hanging baskets that will overflow with foliage. This plant is native to Brazil, so it is heat tolerant, and it likes to dry out, making it a good choice for forgetful gardeners who do not always keep up with watering. Calibrachoa really dislike wet feet, and the plant is prone to root rot, so good drainage is necessary. Containers and raised beds that are more likely to offer better drainage are good planting options.
Superbells® Double Twilight™ Calibrachoa Plant Care
Calibrachoa can be particular about water and soil pH, but once you dial in on the proper levels, this plant is very easy to grow and maintain, and you will be rewarded with beautiful blooms. Average water needs mean the top few inches of the soil should dry out before watering. Do not water if the soil is damp, and ensure the plant is in well-draining soil with a pH of 5.0–6.5. A slow-release fertilizer will keep the Calibrachoa healthy and blooming throughout the growing season. Find a spot that receives 4 to 6 hours of sunlight exposure for best results.
Calibrachoa naturally shed their spent flowers, so deadheading is seldom necessary. A slight trim around midsummer can give the plant a more neat and tidy appearance and promote new growth and blooms. As a perennial in growing zones 9 through 11, Calibrachoa can handle year-round outdoor living in warm climates. The plant can overwinter indoors in cold regions.
Superbells® Double Twilight™ Calibrachoa Plant Spacing
Calibrachoa plants like to spread out and should be spaced 8 to 12 inches apart from other plants and buildings. With proper care, the plants will spread and cover an area of 12 to 24 inches. A 12-inch container is enough space for 2 to 3 of these mounding plants.
