Go for the bold with this splashy calibrachoa hybrid. The purple trumpet-shaped flowers ringed in white are striking enough, but it’s the yellow centers that hypnotize you. Add to that the massive number of flowers, and an easy-going personality and you have a long-season standout for flower power. Luckily for busy gardeners, those flowers need no deadheading – it’s a self-cleaning powerhouse.
Holy Smokes has won multiple awards for its combination of continuous bloom, heat tolerance, and fall interest. Supporting pollinators, it is a beacon to hummingbirds, whose beaks fit those mini-petunia type flowers perfectly. The green foliage can trail as long as 24 inches. Reaching a foot high and two feet wide, it’s a low-maintenance container star as a mounded trailer for hanging baskets, raised beds, window boxes and patio planters. Holy Smokes will shine in full sun or part sun, with best bloom in full sunlight.
Superbells® Holy Smokes!® Calibrachoa Care
Did we mention how easy Holy Smokes is? Like other calibrachoas, it asks for average soil and moisture, with good drainage. Containers are best for calibrachoas, unless your landscape site has impeccable drainage. They do not relish being overly wet or consistently damp, so if your region has wet springs, wait to plant until sunny weather has settled in.
Use a balanced fertilizer (such as 24-12-17) at planting and at recommended intervals in containers. If leaves are yellowing despite fertilization, the pH range in the soil may have gotten too high or low, inhibiting the ability of the plant to absorb iron. This can be fixed by applying iron chelate as a foliar spray (which works faster) or in granules. If the plants become leggy, simply trim back at any time to encourage fuller branching. They won’t mind and will reward you with lush new foliage and flowers within a week.
Superbells® Holy Smokes!® Calibrachoa Spacing
Eight to 12 inches apart is an ideal spacing for Holy Smokes Calibrachoa, since they can spread 12-24 inches across. In hanging baskets, you can plant more closely, perhaps six inches. Choose containers with optimal drainage, and soil that is not overly heavy.
