The large double pink blooms of the Susy Dirr Camellia will delight when they bloom from fall into the winter. Camellia sasanqua 'Green 99-031' as it is botanically called is named after the late Susy Dirr, daughter of Dr. Michael and Bonnie Dirr. Susy was born with cystic fibrosis, but didn’t let that hold her back. Named in her honor, Susy Dirr Camellia is an impressive evergreen shrub that grows to around 8 to 12 feet tall. Deep green leaves make the perfect backdrop for its stunning and fragrant blooms.
High deer resistance makes the Susy Dirr Camellia ideal for a rural location. It is considered winter hardy down to USDA zone 7b. A versatile camellia, ‘Susy Dirr’ is ideal for growing as a specimen, forming a hedge, or training into a small tree. Its evergreen nature can be used to provide useful screening.
Susy Dirr Camellia Care
The Susy Dirr Camellia is happiest when it receives filtered light or morning sun and protection from the harsh afternoon sun. It favors an acidic soil that is fertile, well drained and moist. Fertilize with an ericaceous feed in early spring and mulch with organic matter. Water well upon planting and until a good root system is established. Once mature, dry spells can be tolerated, but avoid overwatering which can lead to root rot.
As a fall-flowering camellia, any pruning should be performed in early spring. Lightly trim to shape and size using a pair of clean and sharp pruners.
Susy Dirr Camellia Spacing
When mature, the Susy Dirr Camellia can reach 8 to 12 feet tall and 5 to 7 feet across. Plant at a spacing of 5 to 7 feet for hedging or further apart for more defined shrubs.
