Growing Zones
The large, semi-double flowers of the Tahiti Hibiscus add bold color and a tropical vibe to a landscape. Deep pinkish-purple flowers have dark red accents near the eye that look like ink or paint dripping from the center. The flowers measure 4 inches wide, and the petals have a textured look, similar to crepe paper. The Hibiscus syriacus 'Mineru' continuously blooms from July through September, with each flower lasting for about one day.
The Tahiti Hibiscus is a woody, deciduous shrub with an upright growth habit and a full form. Green ovate foliage fills in the spaces between the flowers. Create a lovely flowering hedge to conceal a fence or define areas in a yard. This Hibiscus has enough height at maturity to create privacy. The Tahiti Hibiscus can handle increased heat, humidity, and salt. This shrub grows well outdoors in zones 5 through 8.
Tahiti Hibiscus Care
The Tahiti Hibiscus thrives in full sun. This shrub can handle poor-quality soil, but for best results, give it fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. New plants need consistent water. Established plants prefer damp but never soggy conditions. The shrub is drought tolerant at maturity, but blooms best with water during a dry period. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer monthly during the growing season.
Prune the Tahiti Hibiscus in the spring to remove dead growth and crossed branches. Removing flower buds will encourage the remaining buds to produce bigger flowers, but the trade-off is fewer blooms.
Tahiti Hibiscus Spacing
The Tahiti Hibiscus reaches 5 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 7 feet wide. Create a hedge by spacing shrubs 4 to 7 feet apart.
