- Width 18-24 Inches
- Use as a thriller when using in containers
- Tropical yellow flowers attract hummingbirds!
- Growing Zones 8 - 11
Large yellow blooms fill Toucan Yellow Canna Lily all summer, bringing hummingbirds to visit and resisting munching deer. This bright and versatile Canna Lily is a great addition to large containers or the landscape, especially in rain gardens or bogs. Add a tropical feel to a sunny garden without having to max out water use, since these cannas like moisture but require average water only, and even tolerate some drought. The upright plants typically reach nearly 4 feet high, with thick and sturdy flower stalks giving way to lily-shaped blooms.
This plant that hails from tropical areas of America and beyond performs well in hot summers. Toucan Yellow is hardy outdoors in warmer climates (zones 8 through 11) and loves heat. When planted in full or mostly sunny conditions, the rebloomer will stand out in any garden bed or container, typically blooming soon after planting until first frost. Plant several for a colorful mass planting or use this stunning beauty as a focal point in a garden bed or container.
Toucan Yellow Canna Lily Care
Plant your outdoor canna lilies after the soil temperature warms to at least 50 degrees. Choose a mostly sunny spot and leave space for their mature height and some spread in the ground next year. Water regularly for best blooming and feed them with a controlled-release fertilizer at planting time. That should be all the fertilizer the new canna needs until the next spring. Fertilize container-grown cannas at planting with a controlled-release fertilizer and add a water-soluble plant food to occasional waterings beginning midsummer. Remember that containers dry out faster and you might have to water your potted canna more often.
Canna flowers appear all summer and the blooms last a few days. There is no need to deadhead them. If you do not like the look of the faded blooms, you can pinch them off, however, which might help other open blooms last longer. In zones 8 through 11, grow Toucan Yellow Canna Lily as a perennial. In zones 7 and above, you can add a layer of mulch over the ground above the canna lilies after the leaves fade naturally to protect the rhizomes through winter. In colder zones, you can dig up the rhizomes in the ground and store them, separated and wiped free of most soil, in newspaper or paper bag material in a cool, dry spot inside. Potted cannas can move inside, still planted in the pot. If left in a cool spot until spring, the plants should go dormant.
Toucan Yellow Canna Lily Spacing
Although the rhizomes under the ground seem small, these plants need room to spread. Try to give them at least 18 to 24 inches between each other and away from barriers such as border walls. For container-grown canna lilies, choose a pot at least 18 inches in diameter to hold one rhizome per pot.
