You will not be grumpy around this amazing hydrangea with blooms of the deepest, richest blue you have ever seen. The dark green, glossy leaves perfectly complement the flowers. These resist wilting and provide fall interest. In acidic soil the big, full blooms are a deep, purple blue. In neutral to alkaline soil, they are bright red. This Hydrangea macrophylla grows to 24 inches high. It is a versatile deciduous shrub that better tolerates cold weather. It is a reblooming hydrangea loved by butterflies.

The shrub has a compact, mounded growth habit with sturdy stems. Its foliage is disease resistant. It is salt tolerant. This is a low maintenance plant that requires no pruning. Use it in the role of ‘thriller’ in a container. It makes a stunning focal point in the landscape or border. Plant several to create a low hedge. It is a lovely cut flower and beautiful when dried. This compact hydrangea is perfect for small spaces.

Wee Bit Grumpy® Hydrangea Care

Choose a site that is not hot and dry. Dig a large hole, approximately two feet wide and one foot deep in moist, well-drained soil. Plant with the crown 1 inch below the soil level. Water regularly with an average amount of water – this plant does not tolerate ‘wet feet.’ Add 2-3 inches of mulch. Fertilize with a granular rose fertilizer in early spring and in late spring. You may sprinkle the granules on top of the mulch, watering immediately to dissolve them and send them to the soil. It thrives in morning sun and afternoon shade – in hotter climates it prefers more shade. For blue flowers the shrub needs a pH of 5.5 plus aluminum sulphate. A soil test will show if this is necessary. Do not treat unless you are sure because you do not want to pollute the soil. A pH of 6.5, or higher, results in pink/red tones.

Wee Bit Grumpy® blooms on new wood and old wood. In the spring it blooms on the previous year’s growth, then in summer on new growth. As a result, you should avoid pruning. Remove damaged wood in the spring. If your hydrangea does not bloom, the most common reasons are winter injury, too much shade, poor fertility, or too much nitrogen.

Really really disappointed and just an awful...

Posted by David Passinsky on Sep 14, 2023

I wanted to get a really nice hydrangea for our garden. We bought two from home depot and one from here. We spent nearly 50 dollars on a single plant. When it arrived it was covered in mold and died quickly. Home depot plants are thriving. We alerted them quickly but as of right now (almost 30 days), nothing. Super disappointing.

    average, so far

No sign of bloom yet. It's growing fine, but my other bushes are in full bloom and this shows no signs of bloom yet. It's a new plant, so maybe next season, but I am disappointed.

    Couldn't have asked for better!

I can only container garden, so I was hunting for this specific compact variety. After verifying it wasn't carried in my local nurseries, I very nervously hit the order button at Plant Addicts. My baby hydrangeas arrived impeccably packaged and in GLORIOUS condition. Completely covered in leaves and buds, truly ideal. Since planting them, I've watched these shrubs seamlessly adapt and are now beginning to bloom in color. The only thing left for me to do is coach the soil to change them from pink to blue! Exactly what I was looking for and a great vendor experience! Also, Plant Addicts has so much information on their website about them! It really made the education process easy. I will definitely consider Plant Addicts in the future!

    Wee Bit Grumpy...

Posted by Lolasmom on Aug 06, 2022

I just received this hydrangea at the end of July in the middle of a heat wave. The plant was healthy and strong looking. I planted it in my garden and have been keeping it watered in this horrible heat and humidity we've had but I am happy to report it has grown nicely in just 2 weeks. It didn't have any buds on it and it still doesn't but I am hoping that maybe it will bud before fall. I would love to see some blooms but since I got it so late in the season I am not sure I will. Despite that, I am very happy with my purchase of this hydrangea and am so pleased with the health and looks of this shrub! Another great plant from Plant Addicts!

Was a little disappointed with the size when I received it. However it’s a very healthy plant and has already started to enlarge. I am anxious to see some buds and blooms. Was happy that it was delivered when I was told it would be. Really good customer service and communication
