For an evergreen cypress with a weeping habit, look no further than the Weeping Alaskan Cedar. Botanically known as Callitropsis nootkatensis, this stunning specimen looks impressive year round. Growing to 15 to 20 feet high, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar produces elegant deep green-blue foliage on upright pointing branches. Not only that, but the Weeping Alaskan Cedar is a fast-growing and low-maintenance tree.
Being evergreen, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar is ideal for adding winter interest and structure to any garden. Forming a natural pyramid shape, this cedar is perfect for growing on its own or adding to a mixed woodland area. Native to the Pacific Northwest, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar is suitable for growing in USDA zones 5 to 8. As it requires minimal pruning, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar is considered low maintenance.
Weeping Alaskan Cedar Care
Due to its size, care must be taken when positioning this tree to ensure that no overhead structures are affected in the future. In order to thrive, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar prefers full or partial sun, and fertile, free-draining soil that is kept moist. Regular irrigation is required to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. As with other conifers, a slightly acidic soil is its preference. Mulching around the base can help conserve moisture.
Light pruning can be done in late winter. When pruning the Weeping Alaskan Cedar, it is advisable to only trim the current year’s growth, as it may not regrow from harder pruning. However, any broken or dead material can be removed anytime.
Weeping Alaskan Cedar Spacing
When fully grown, the Weeping Alaskan Cedar can reach 15 to 20 feet tall and wide. To appreciate its weeping form, a spacing of around 20 feet is recommended.
